Massage Therapy
Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) are qualified and highly educated health-care practitioners trained in anatomy and physiology to assess structural issues causing movement disorders and hindrances. RMTs are trained to recognize and treat musculoskeletal conditions with various evidence-based techniques and specialized modalities. Registered Massage Therapy is covered under most extended benefit plans.

SWEDISH MASSAGE TECHNIQUES
 Classical manipulations used by a massage therapist that are complemented with the use of non-Swedish techniques, remedial exercise and hydrotherapy to achieve physiological and psychological effects to treat the client’s condition.

HYDROTHERAPY
Hydrotherapy uses water in its solid, liquid or gaseous form, for its therapeutic effects. It is a useful adjunct to any treatment and can prepare the body for treatment or modulate and promote the effects of treatment.

DEEP FACIAL TECHNIQUES
 Direct techniques take the connective tissue that surrounds all muscles, bones and organs, called fascia, reducing any restriction or adhesion caused by  inflammation, trauma, surgery, or postural imbalances, effectively breaking down any unhealthy restrictive bonds.

TRIGGER-POINT THERAPY
A trigger point is a hyperirritable spot, usually within a taut band of skeletal muscle or its fascia (Travell, Simons, 1983). It often exhibits a predictable pain referral pattern and causes shortening of the affected muscle. If indicated, trigger points can be worked on within any treatment.

JOINT MOBILIZATION
Techniques to increase joint mobilization are applied rhythmically and slowly allowing the connective tissue time to respond. Joint play techniques affect joint proprioceptors, decreasing tone and spasm of muscles and promoting reduced adhesions and joint health.

The use of a combination of active and passive exercise to restore and improve the client’s musculoskeletal health. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is a form of manual medicine that improves mobility while stretching the muscles..

Do you do 'deep tissue' massage:
 Moderate to deep pressure is often required to relieve the tension in muscles and the fascia, but there is a myth in massage therapy that, in order for a treatment to be effective, it should hurt. This is untrue and the idea of 'deep tissue' is a gimmick, without evidence. Your muscles are there to protect you, and will only let deeper pressure in when feeling calm and safe.

Should I book a massage if I don't have any injuries or discomfort in my muscles:
 Yes. Massage therapy can increase proprioception and interoception of your body's system, which is necessary for injury prevention and decreasing the potential of early morbidity or chronic pain — we don't always feel our misalignment or pathology in the body until it is too late. Exercise alone cannot prevent injury, in fact it can lead to its likeliness with repetitive misaligned movements that go unnoticed.

Why work alongside psychotherapists:
 There is growing evidence to suggest that physiological and structural imbalance and misalignment is a miscommunication of the mind and body. Our psyche develops protector parts that instigate how our body should move or be within its perceived environment, but this isn't always in our body's best interest. By addressing cultural and/or developmental traumas to our mindbody system, a greater and more significant positive change can occur.

Can I seek massage in lieu of a mental health worker:
 No, massage therapy work should not replace the care and support of a specialized mental health worker, but it is a safe and effective complimentary service that will help you achieve and sustain your mental health goals. There is no shortage of evidence to suggest the benefits of massage therapy on nervous system regulation, improved sleep, and a more consistent state of well being.

Do I need to take my clothes off during a treatment:
 No, you are not required to remove any clothes if this is not your comfort level — I am able to modify the treatment to be effective if you choose to be fully clothed or not, in which case I rely on draping the sheets so that areas are securely covered when not being treated. At the beginning of each treatment we discuss your goals and I make recommendations for areas to be treated based on these goals, but you are the authority on what areas you agree to be treated and what clothing items will or will not be removed.

Do I need to talk during the treatment:
 Because my treatment philosophy is rooted in uniting the mindbody, I will only instigate conversation that helps facilitate re-connection. However, your comfort and ease is the most important aspect of an effective treatment and therefore conversation is always welcome at your discretion.
